The vineyard produces two dry wines made from the Blanc Du Bois grapes and Black Spanish grapes grown on site. Over the years, German and Czech immigrants called this small community home, naming and renaming it many times. At one time, Fayetteville was named Lick Skillet (Lickskillet). Supposedly, latecomers to the numerous community festivals, who complained that all the food was gone, were told to lick the skillet. Concert Line-Up Officially Announced for Flatonia Czhilispiel 40

Flatonia Celebrates 40^th Hometown Festival with Stellar Headliners

Flatonia, Texas – July 23, 2012 – After much anticipation, the Flatonia Czhilispiel Committee has announced the 2012 Czhilispiel concert lineup.

Czhilispiel 40 takes place in downtown Flatonia, October 26-28, 2012, and true to tradition, Czhilispiel will continue to highlight Texas music, with three days of nearly non-stop concerts on the main stage in the giant tented biergarten.   Texas music titan Robert Earl Keen will co-headline with classic country band The Bellamy Brothers.

A July 16^th teaser on the Czhilispiel Facebook page stated, “Well its official. Contracts are signed. Get ready for CZ 40, with Robert Earl Keen and The Bellamy Brothers.”  The Flatonia Chamber website soon followed with the full roster of bands, which includes Max Rios & The Waysiders, who have played the Czhilspiel “Survivor Party” in past years.  The lineup is rounded out with bands from Central Texas playing music of various genres to get the crowd dancing, including rock, country, folk, and polka.  The full music schedule is as follows:

The inaugural Czhilispiel festival was held in 1973, celebrating the 100^th anniversary of the city, and as a fundraiser to help fund a local Flatonia student’s medical school education.  At the time Flatonia needed a doctor, so the residents organized the Czech heritage festival and chili cook-off, Czhilispiel.  The student agreed to serve the community for at least five years after completing medical school, but ended up staying longer.  Since then, Czhilispiel has become Flatonia’s premier tourism festival and one of the largest “czhili” cook-offs in the State of Texas, and always held the last full weekend of October.  Participants can be judged in a variety of food categories: chili, brisket, chicken, ribs, and beans.  Czhilispiel continues to use proceeds from the event to benefit local needs, whether for students or community services.   Flatonia is located midway between Houston and San Antonio, about 70 miles southeast of Austin.

TxDOT Launches Real-time Travel Information Application

Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has launched a new online map application, Drive Texas (TM), that provides travelers with real-time traffic conditions, traffic and weather feeds, as well as links to other useful travel information.  Drive Texas (TM) displays statewide conditions affecting travel-construction, closures, accidents-as well as a live weather feed that allows drivers to check conditions along their route. 

The new site features a user-friendly interface, making it easy for the traveling public to access real-time conditions affecting travel across Texas, and can be found at www/DriveTexas.org, or by clicking on the "Highway Conditions" link on the TxDOT homepage at www.TxDOT. gov.

CASA of Bastrop, Inc. serves abused and neglected children in Bastrop, Lee and Fayette Counties. Our goal is to provide a trained CASA volunteer for every child who needs an advocate. We rely heavily on volunteers to complete our mission.

CASA of Bastrop currently represents 49 abused and neglected children in Fayette County. Several of these children do have volunteers on their cases (and the remainder are served by CASA staff), but CASA is in need of more volunteers, particularly those from the LaGrange, Schulenburg, and Flatonia communities.

Volunteering for any organization can be fulfilling, but providing assistance for this particular segment of children can be life-changing. The commitment can be anywhere from a few hours a month up to as much as a volunteer is willing to give. Take one case with one child ... or several cases with multiple kids each. You get to choose.

Paint, canvas, and brushes are provided, as is an experienced and enthusiastic local artist who can lead you step by step through the process of recreating the featured artwork.
